character application info

basic info

Name: Aji Tae
Age: That's kind of impossible to know, but for what it's worth he looks mid-20s to early 30s, and is actually centuries old.
Canon: Shin Angyo Onshi
History:
The wikia's history section is empty, so I'll just summarize.

Aji is a demon, but not a demon in the most "known" sense. Rather, in his natural form he is a malevolent "spirit" without ego, personality, physical form or even appearance, but possessing vast power. To gain a physical body (among other things), the demons "devour" the soul of another being, taking on their personality, their memories, their skills, etc, and strengthening themselves. The resulting being could be called a composite of the demon's malevolence and the devoured soul(s)' desires, drives, etc.

That's the nature of the beings in question. As for Aji himself, his earliest chronological appearance takes place in the childhood of the protagonist of the series (Munsu) and his best friend (Hae Mo Su). Exploring outside their home village, the two find Aji strung up and imprisoned within a demon containment circle. He whispers in the two children's minds, offering them their desires in exchange for his freedom. It's worth noting that Hae Moe Su was the last survivor of the deposed royal family of Jushin, because Hae instinctively wished to regain the throne that was his birthright. Forming that unspoken bargain freed Aji, who later appeared as a second in command to Munsu, who had become general of Hae's rebel armies in their attempt to regain the throne of Jushin.

During this time, Aji appears as a young, dark haired human. He does not make his nature known. However, he does subtly lend his power to Hae Mo Su's cause, thus facilitating their victory and fulfilling his end of the bargain when Hae Mo Su becomes king. Shortly thereafter, Aji devoured the new king's soul, and took on his appearance and personality, masquerading as him and ruling Jushin in his place for years. During that time, Munsu and Hae's sickly childhood friend (and the woman they both loved), Kye found herself growing weaker and nearer to death. Munsu submitted to a ritual performed by "Hae" (Aji Tae) meant to transfer her illness to him to save her life. However, in reality, Aji simply made Munsu sick as well. Unknown to Munsu, Kye died shortly thereafter... but it wouldn't be like Aji to let her rest in peace. Instead, he raised her from the dead and married her, though she was in love with Munsu and was aware that there was something indefinably "wrong" with her old friend. After they were married, Aji framed Munsu for treason, turning him into a fugitive.

Eventually, Munsu returns to Jushin, where he intends to confront his best friend and king about the false accusations. There, he quickly realized that something was not right, eventually leading to the revelation that Aji had taken over Hae Mo Su's role and appearance. To make matters worse, he also raped Kye, who had thus far refused to consummate their marriage, and revealed to her that she was essentially a slowly rotting corpse with a soul bound to it. Kye "killed" herself on Munsu's sword in horror. Munsu, now the only survivor of that trio of old friends, determined he would confront and defeat Aji in time.

Aji, meanwhile, set about on his pleasure mission to cause as much suffering and pain as possible because... why not?

personality

Strengths: [What are the positive qualities of your character's personality? What are they good at? Be detailed!]

Flaws: Aji is generally obsessive which can give him tunnel vision and leave him vulnerable, as he will fixate on specific people or things to his detriment.

He's also terrified of death, and that can tend to make him paranoid - he creates backup plan upon backup plan to try to ensure his survival, to the point of diluting his own power by creating a "satellite" body and regurgitating one of the souls he'd devoured to power it so he'd have somewhere to jump if something happened to his primary body.

He is easily annoyed by things he can't understand - especially positive emotions or selflessness. Indeed, he tends to assume all humans are twisted and will act in their own self-interest, and when they don't, he may become angry and frustrated. The severity of his reaction will depend a great deal on how invested he was in that specific person showing their "true nature" - i.e. being selfish and cruel.

Like many a primary antagonist, however, Aji Tae's biggest weakness is his tendency to underestimate the abilities of others. In canon that's basically what got him killed, in fact.

Miscellaneous: Aji Tae is selfish, sadistic and incapable of normal emotion. That doesn't mean he has no feelings whatsoever - he tends to inherit the feelings of people he devours, but they come out quite twisted. For example, he married the woman Hae Mo Su loved, but kept her captive, physically and mentally abused her and ultimately raped her. He's also fixated on Munsu, who was Hae Mo Su's best friend, but his obsession takes the form of the desire to destroy him emotionally and physically. So yes, he's sadistic, cruel and generally gains pleasure through causing pain - if he were a human instead of a demon, it would be fair to call him a psychopath.

That said, he also displays a tendency toward loneliness and when he sees someone he considers to be "like" him on some level, he will murder, torture, kidnap and brainwash as needed to possess them. Even then, he can't really form a "normal" attachment: in the series, he becomes obsessed with Munsu's bodyguard companion, Sando, and basically brainwashes her into becoming a sworn sword and, implicitly, a sexual outlet. However, he doesn't love her, he's just attracted to her because he senses her potential to become something as strong as he is, himself.

All this said, Aji's personality can really swing around - he puts on a great jovial/friendly act and, perhaps because of the various souls and personalities he's incorporated into himself, he's quite a social chameleon. He can be poetic and thoughtful and philosophical at times, but often presents himself as a goofy and harmless wanderer as well. Furthermore, early in his association with Munsu, he acted the part of an insightful and kindhearted young man. None of these faces are fake, exactly, but rather he calls on them from the various pieces of himself that make up the whole being called Aji Tae.

Aji Tae has a dramatic sort of flair and can often be seen with an animal companion which is actually a disguised human "pet," though who the pet is doesn't make much difference - he's happy to grab a random new one and make it look like a tiger or anything of the sort. He's also been known to be in the company of animals disguised as humans, but that gets a bit too much into the nature of perceptions in the Shin Ango Onshi world - suffice to say, the only "people" he shows fairly genuine fondness for are monsters with the appearance of women... and he's initially introduced with a duck that turns out to be a human child that he keeps on a leash.

His greatest pleasure, however, is the pain and despair of others. Which doesn't mean that he just walks around torturing and mass murdering. No, he prefers to ripen his despair fruit before he plucks it. He spent years manipulating and terrorizing his wife before finally tearing her dreams down, after all. So, really, aside from violent tantrums, legitimate combat and self-defense, he's far more prone to drawing people in, getting to know them, and then slowly stripping their hopes away than he is to simple acts of destruction. Although he enjoys those, too.
